1. What is retrieval practice? – Luyện nhớ chủ động là gì?
Retrieval practice means bringing previously learned information back to mind. Pupils first attempt to recall an answer, explanation, procedure, or relationship; they then check and correct it. The Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) recommends combining retrieval with review across time.
Australian Education Research Organisation
For example, instead of immediately reopening a textbook, pupils close it and explain two things they remember. The teacher then provides a reference answer so they can identify what was accurate and what needs attention.
2. Research foundations – Cơ sở nghiên cứu
Retrieval practice has a long research history and should not be attributed to one inventor. Henry L. Roediger III and Jeffrey D. Karpicke’s 2006 study is an influential contribution: with prose-learning tasks, retrieval produced better delayed retention than repeated study under the conditions examined.
PubMed
The Institute of Education Sciences (IES), a research institute within the U.S. Department of Education, also recommends using quizzes to revisit key content. Its practice guide emphasizes active recall and correct-answer feedback as tools for learning.
Viện Khoa học Giáo dục Hoa Kỳ (IES), thuộc Bộ Giáo dục Hoa Kỳ, cũng khuyến nghị sử dụng câu hỏi kiểm tra ngắn để quay lại nội dung trọng tâm. Hướng dẫn thực hành của viện nhấn mạnh việc chủ động nhớ lại và phản hồi đáp án đúng như những công cụ hỗ trợ học tập. ies.ed.gov
These findings support a teaching approach, not a promise that every activity will have the same effect. The classroom examples below are proposed adaptations for Vietnamese primary education.
3. A short classroom routine – Quy trình ngắn trong lớp học
A practical routine takes approximately five minutes:
- Select two or three important questions about content already taught.
- Ask every pupil to answer from memory.
- Give enough thinking time before inviting responses.
- Display or explain the answers.
- Let pupils correct their work.
- Use the responses to plan the next teaching step.
For a large class, mini-whiteboards or small slips of paper make participation visible. Ask pupils to prepare their own responses before discussing with a partner. Otherwise, some may copy a classmate’s answer without attempting retrieval.
4. Questions should include understanding – Câu hỏi cần kiểm tra cả mức hiểu
Recall activities can include facts, explanations, comparisons, and applications. AERO recommends conceptual and higher-order questions alongside factual questions, so pupils retrieve knowledge and use it in different ways.
Australian Education Research Organisation
For Mathematics, after pupils have learned area and perimeter, ask: “A rectangle is 6 cm long and 4 cm wide. Find its perimeter and area. Explain why their units differ.” The answers are 20 cm and 24 cm². Pupils must retrieve both procedures and their meanings.
Follow up with: “Could two rectangles have the same perimeter but different areas?” For example, rectangles measuring 6 × 4 and 7 × 3 both have a perimeter of 20 units, but their areas are 24 and 21 square units.
5. Examples in Vietnamese and Science – Ví dụ môn Tiếng Việt và Khoa học
After pupils have read and discussed a story, ask them to close the book and name one action that reveals a character’s quality. They explain the connection, then reopen the text to verify the detail. This separates remembering the story from checking textual evidence.
For younger pupils, ask a specific question such as “What did the character do to help a friend?” rather than “Tell me everything you remember.” A guide on retrieval in early childhood recommends prompts that make recall accessible to young learners.
Với học sinh nhỏ tuổi, sử dụng câu hỏi cụ thể như “Nhân vật đã làm gì để giúp bạn?” thay vì “Hãy kể mọi điều em nhớ”. Hướng dẫn về luyện nhớ ở trẻ nhỏ khuyến nghị sử dụng gợi ý giúp các em thực hiện hoạt động nhớ lại vừa sức. Retrieval Practice Early Childhood Guide
In Science, after learning that air occupies space, ask pupils to sketch the inverted-cup experiment and explain why the paper inside stayed dry. During feedback, clarify that the air trapped in the upright, inverted cup prevented water from reaching the paper.
6. Feedback completes the activity – Phản hồi giúp hoàn thiện hoạt động
Feedback should explain why an answer is correct, not merely mark it right or wrong. Cognitive scientist Pooja K. Agarwal recommends explanatory feedback and keeping retrieval activities low-pressure and non-competitive.
Phản hồi cần giải thích vì sao đáp án đúng, thay vì chỉ đánh dấu đúng hoặc sai. Nhà khoa học nhận thức Pooja K. Agarwal khuyến nghị phản hồi có giải thích và tổ chức hoạt động luyện nhớ với ít áp lực, không mang tính thi đua. retrievalpractice.org
When a pupil confuses perimeter with area, say: “You added the lengths around the shape, so you found the perimeter. Area describes the surface covered by unit squares.” Give the pupil time to correct the answer and explain the distinction.
Teachers can introduce the activity by saying: “This helps us find what we remember and what we need to practise. You may make mistakes, and we will correct them together.” There is no need to grade every response.
7. Revisit learning across time – Quay lại kiến thức theo thời gian
A suggested classroom plan is to revisit selected content in the next lesson, the following week, and later in the unit. This is a starting arrangement, not a fixed optimal schedule. Adjust the interval and support according to pupils’ responses.
Use one question from recent learning and one from an earlier topic. Keep a simple record of recurring errors rather than storing every response. This helps teachers identify content that requires reteaching.
Sử dụng một câu hỏi về nội dung mới học và một câu về chủ đề trước đó. Ghi lại những lỗi lặp lại thay vì lưu mọi câu trả lời. Cách này giúp giáo viên nhận diện nội dung cần hướng dẫn lại.
8. Support pupils and review the teaching – Hỗ trợ học sinh và xem lại cách dạy
Pupils can recall through speech, drawing, writing, or manipulating objects. If writing is not the learning target, do not let writing speed prevent a pupil from showing remembered knowledge. Provide a partial cue when needed, then return to a less-supported task later.
If pupils repeatedly cannot recall the content, examine whether the original explanation was clear, the questions were suitable, and the task was too demanding. Revisit the teaching before increasing the number of recall questions.
For professional discussion, teachers can compare responses to a few equivalent questions across lessons: Which errors remain? Who needs support? Can pupils explain and apply the knowledge, as well as recall it? These observations guide the next lesson.
